A Gentle Guide to Accompany the Dying
Not long ago midwives and doulas for birthing were not in the mainstream. Now look at the consciousness of this sacred practice. Death doulas specialize in assisting families through a loved one's death; we nurture the needs of the family and the person who is in the final transition from this life.

When there is an experienced, knowledgeable doula as part of a family's support system there is a relaxation that happens within. They know someone is there who knows what is happening and can handle whatever may come. The doula will guide the family in this process and how to best support their loved one and each other. We educate about the process of dying because we know that with information much anxiety is relieved. Doulas provide a loving, stabilizing presence.

Spiritual and emotional support is paramount at this time, for this is the being of the person and their family right now. When your doula is also a nurse, you have another person working with your hospice team to ensure your loved one is physically comfortable. When comfort is obtained, then the other important matters can be addressed. The family is then free to tend to their loved one and each other, their spiritual and emotional needs, instead of worrying about 'what to do.'

Midwives and doulas for the dying are needed now more than ever. There is a reclaiming of death as being a part of the natural order of life, instead of a failure of treatment or a medical event. Since many of us have not been part of this process with our families over the years, midwives are those gentle guides as we keep our loved ones close to home and out of the hospitals.

Midwives and doulas for the dying are a significant part of this transition.

As individual as a fingerprint is each person's death and each person's reaction to it.
